Earth Day is almost upon, but what does that really mean? For some it undoubtedly means nothing. For others it means a great deal. I think, in part, that’s the beauty of it. Each person can choose what a day will mean to them and what they will do with it. Will you invest in this day or will you squander it? Will you move through your day with meaning and purpose or will you just float? Will you plan and execute or are you content just to let life happen? I challenge you as you go throughout your day to ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing right now going to get me closer to my goals?” Is engaging “that person” on social media going to spark meaningful discussion and open dialogue or will it generate more digital pollution? We face decisions almost every minute of every day, but are we mindful of them? Do we count the cost of our words and deeds?
What does Earth Day mean to EDGE Manufacturing? For us it is yet another day to look with gratitude upon our Creator for the employees and customers we serve. We are thankful that these employees are able to recycle over 3 tons of plastic material per hour to be reused and repurposed by our customers instead of ending up in a landfill. It is but a drop in the bucket when compared to a global scale, but isn’t that what life really is anyway? Most of us will never make a huge splash in this world, but we can do what we can where we are. Success is nothing more than a series of right decisions made consistently over time. Did you make a bad decision? Surprise! You’re not perfect! Did you make a REALLY bad decision? Join the club! None of us are getting off this Earth with our nose clean. It’s what you do with those mistakes that count.
It is no secret that EDGE Manufacturing hires felons and trust me when I say it would be easier not to sometimes. We offer them employment and I teach classes on Money Management, Life Skills and Good Decision-Making. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Our owners and leaders feel investing in these men and women is valuable. If we can help them they can help others. Disciples make disciples as the old saying goes and I can think of no better way to help the world-at-large than starting right in your own backyard.
In truth, I am just a husband and a father who is deeply flawed and in need of a Savior. Like you, I rise each morning and work hard to provide for the family I love. Do I make a big splash? No, but to my kids and wife I do. I must always remember that just my attitude alone can affect the entire household. Am I quick-tempered with my children or do I listen to the same story for the third time all the while smiling and nodding like I’ve never heard it all? Do I thank my wife for her hard work, loyalty and perseverance every so often or do I take her for granted again this day?
I don’t have to change the world. Like so many of us, that’s not my calling, but you can change your little corner of the world more than you realize. So again I ask you, are your actions today consistent with your goals tomorrow? Who do you need to apologize to? Who do you need to forgive? Are you doing what you can not just on Earth Day, but every day?
